We are going to listen to A day in the life by The Beatles.

While listening you're going to complete the following exercises:

1. Fill the gaps - listen to the missing words.

2. Underline at least two examples of:

           - The Past Simple

           - The Past Perfect

This is Sam

Sam is really sad because someone broke into her house yesterday and took some of her belongings. 

The next day, she speaks to her mentor Don. 

Sam? What's wrong?

You look so sad!

My house was
broken into.  

Oh no! Was

anything stolen?

My laptop was
stolen.  

Someone stole your laptop? How horrible!

My laptop was stolen.

But who did it?

I have no idea!?

Question!

Was Sam sad because of who stole her stuff or because her stuff was stolen?

 Look at the sentences. What do they emphasize?

 

Someone stole my laptop	My laptop was stolen
Someone stole my watch	My watch was stolen
Someone stole my ring	My ring was stolen
Someone stole my phone	My phone was stolen
Someone stole my piggy bank	My piggy bank was stolen

The passive

Both sentences are correct.

But one emphasizes the result and one the person who did it.

We use the passive when we want to emphasize the action instead of the person who did it or when we don't know who did it. 

We do this by taking the passive (Dutch: lijdend voorwerp)

and putting it at the beginning of the sentence. 

My laptop was stolen.

Someone stole my laptop

The passive - Present and past

We can have a passive form of the present simple and past simple
