  • Around 750 BC. the Greeks had colonies in Spain, Italy and Turkey

  • So much trade developed between the colonies and the 'mother country' that the Greeks stopped creating new colonies around 550 bc.

  • Through the Greek colonies, people in the Mediterranean became familiar with Greek culture (such as: mythology, sculpture, etc.)

The Greek spread their culture. Alexander the Great was one of the most famous leaders who did so!

 Other languages sounded like “barbarbarbar…” to them. So the Greeks started calling foreigners barbarians – people whose culture they thought was not as good as theirs.
