When to use which tense 
1. Figure out where the verb tense is missing: is it in the if-clause (condition) or the main clause (result)? 
2. In the if-clause, only three tenses can occur: a present simple, a past simple or a past perfect.
3. In the main clause (result) there are four possibilities: a present simple, a future with will, a future with would, a future perfect
