Comparatives

Today we are talking about:

Spelling rules: short adjective

• Add -er to short adjectives (small -> smaller)
• Add -r if the adjective ends in -e (safe -> safer)
• Double the consonant if the adjective ends in a vowel and a consonant (big -> bigger)

• If the adjective ends in -y, we change the -y into -ier       (funny -> funnier)

Irregular adjectives

Good -> better

Bad -> worse

Far -> further

Hierbij zijn geen regels. Deze onregelmatige bijvoeglijke naamwoorden moet je gewoon uit je hoofd leren.

Spelling rules: long adjectives

• We use more for most long adjectives (comfortable -> more comfortable).
• De meeste twee-lettergreep bijvoeglijke naamwoorden die eindigen op -y, gedragen zich als short adjectives                 (friendly -> friendlier).

• We use than when we compare two things. 

Australia is big, but Canada is _____ Australia.
