Wind 3.3
Subjects:
 High and low pressure
Wind direction and wind speed
Storm Ciara 2019

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Lesson Objectives
You know what high and low pressure areas are and whether the air pressure there is higher or lower than elsewhere.
• You can explain what the wind direction, wind speed and wind force are.
• You can explain how winds arise.
• You can explain why wind has a cooling effect.
• You can explain why air is a thermal insulator.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

High pressure
- Area in which the air pressure is higher than the pressure outside the area.
- The weather in a high pressure area is generally calm and sunny.
- If the air pressure is rising, that is a sign that the weather will improve
- It is shown with a capital H

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

High pressure area (anticyclone)

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

What kind of pressure area do you recognize?

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

What kind of pressure area do you recognize?

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

What kind of pressure area did you see?
A
Low pressure area
B
High pressure area
C
Both
D
You are not able to answer this question

Slide 7 - Quizvraag

Low pressure
Here the pressure is lower that other areas
It is shown with a capital L
Lots of wind, rain and changeable weather

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Low pressure area

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Wind direction northern hemisphere

- High pressure the wind moves out  of the centre clockwise
- Low pressure The wind moves in a spiral towards the centre Anticlockwise

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Wind force
The strengts of the winds are indicated in the Beaufort scale
from 0 to 12.

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

What was de maximum windspeed of storm Bella (2020)

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

What was the maximum windspeed?
A
74 km/h
B
88km/h
C
less than 74km/h
D
more than 88 km/h

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Isobars
Line on a weather chart that connects places where the air is at the same pressure.

The pressure difference between 2 isobars is 5 hPa.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

On the weather chart, areas are indicated with an “H” or “L”.

Which area will get the most sun?
A
Area's marked with H
B
Areas marked with L
C
You are not able to tell
