Lesson 3
Erosion
Slide 1 - Tekstslide
At the end of the lesson you can ...
Explain what erosion is.
Explain the difference between a U valley and a V valley.
Explain the three forces responsible for erosion.
Name different characteristics of different mountain ranges.
Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Slide 3 - Tekstslide
What two types of weathering are there?
Slide 4 - Open vraag
What three types of mechanical weathering are there.
Slide 5 - Open vraag
Explain how chemical weathering takes place.

Write down all the important keyterms you have learned that you can link with the following image.
Slide 7 - Tekstslide
Slide 8 - Tekstslide
Rocks are being moved
Weathered material is carried away by rivers, glaciers and by the wind.
In this process, erosion occurs.
Slide 9 - Tekstslide
Erosion
= the wearing away of rock under the influence of water, ice or by the action of wind, moving the rock.
The big difference between weathering and erosion is that erosion always involves a transport agent.
Slide 10 - Tekstslide
Erosion by rivers
Weathering material enters rivers.
Rocks collide and rub against each other.
Pieces break off.
Stones are rounded off.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide
Erosion by ice
Glacier: packs of ice sometimes hundreds of metres thick.
High in the mountains; precipitation falls as snow.
New snow compresses and becomes ice: firn.
Carried material is sedimented --> terminal moraine.
PIF
Precipation: water that falls from the clouds towards the ground, especially as rain or snow.

Sedimentation: a natural process in which rock is formed from small pieces of sand, stone, etc. that have been left by water, ice, or wind :

Erosion by wind
PIF
Scour: rubbing an object hard with something rough.
Slide 21 - Tekstslide
Landscape cycle
= the whole process of weathering, erosion and sedimentation.

Relief
Variations in height = relief
Lowlands= 0-200 meter
Hill country = 200-500 meter
Low mountain range= 500-1500 meter
High mountain range= 1500 meter and higher
Slide 24 - Tekstslide
What relief are these mountains?
Slide 25 - Tekstslide
Mountain ranges
Mountains with a lot of relief and high, sharp peaks --> young mountain ranges
Mountains with little relief and low, round tops --> old mountain ranges
