Past Continuous!

Used for events that were going on in the past.

General rule:

was / were + verb + ing

• I was walking home at 5 p.m.
• They were calling each other this morning.

They _________ (laugh) through the lesson.

We _________ (go) to the cinema after dinner.

Past Continuous + Past Simple!

Past Continuous is also used in combination with the Past Simple:

• ...that happened at the same time as other events, one was already happening;

I was eating my lunch when my sister entered the room.

• ...that were annoying (always);

My brother was always listening to music when I was young.

For past events...

My sister _________ (watch) her favourite show, when suddenly the TV _________ (turn) off.

We _________ (eat) our lunch, when the bell _________ (ring)

I _________ (get) a flat tire, when I _________ (ride) my bike.

Past Continuous + Past Continuous!

Past Continuous is also used in combination with itself:

• ...that happened at the same time, where both events were not finished.

My father was cooking dinner, when my mother was still working

For events...

They _________ (get) ready for the party, when I _________ (wait) to go already.

When we _________ (lose) the game, our coach _________ (try) to motivate us.

You _________ (study) at school, while everybody else _________ (leave).
