In 1860 werd Abraham Lincoln gekozen als de 16e president. Hij was president van 1860 tot 1865.

De verkiezing van Abraham Lincoln in 1860 was een directe oorzaak van de afscheiding van de eerste 7 zuidelijke staten (SC, MS, FL, AL, GA, LA, TX), die in februari 1861 de Confederatie vormden.

Why did Southern states want Abraham Lincoln dead?

• Op 22 september 1862 kondigde Abraham Lincoln de Emancipation Proclamation af. 
• Hierin maakte hij bekend op 1 januari 1863, dat 3 miljoen slaaf gemaakten in de Verenigde Staten de vrijheid zouden krijgen, namelijk de slaven die zich in de zuidelijke staten en Noordelijke staten bevonden. 
• Dit besluit was ook militair gemotiveerd. 

De vrije slaven mochten meevechten in de burgeroorlog. Ook de slaven in het Zuiden die naar het Noorden ontsnapten mochten mee doen.

Eenmaal een slaaf uit de Zuiden in het Noorden was, was hij vrij.
