Continuous:   verb "to be" + verb + ing 

I am studying hard.  - Present continuous

 He was studying to be a vet, but he gave it up when he won the lottery. - Past continuous

Perfect tense:  have and the past participle

I have worked here for five years. - Present perfect

We had worked together before we started our own business. - Past perfect

Perfect continuous: have + past participle of "to be" + ing

I have been working in Dubai for five years now-Present perfect continuous

We had been working in Yemen before the war. Past perfect continuous

Stative vs dynamic Verbs

Remember that certain verbs are never used in their continuous form and that some of the most common of these are verbs which express

a) thoughts or opinions

b) likes or preferences

c) states or possesions
