1. When/By the time Marietje turned fifty, she had been waiting for her prince for years. (emphasizes duration, so Present Perfect Continuous)

2. They dropped my uncle Bob on his head when he was three years old/at the age of three.

3. They bump into each other every day: I think they're in love.

4. "Will you always love me?", he asked. (asking after a promise for the future)

5. When he was still working here, he often used to take rash decisions. (was still working here = temporary time in the past; used to take = habit)

6. What did you have for breakfast yesterday?









7. Buy a calcultor yourself! I'm not lending you mine! (right now/not lending it)

8. When I met him last week, he told me that he had passed his driving test. (earlier action in the past = past perfect; indirect speech)

9. Did you see my mother yesterday? She has recently dyed her hair blue.

SVOPT rule = subject verb object place time 
(place/time at the beginning of sentence = also ok)

10. He usually doesn't get up before 9 AM on Sunday.

11. I think he's/has played well (just finished/result). Actually, he always plays well when his
girlfriend watches (the game).

12. What is your son doing nowadays? He's working abroad for a few months. (asking after a temporary situation/these days)

13. When he was building his house, he forgot (during the time of building, not previously) to place windows. Now they still have to/need to be installed.







14. Who was driving  (= longer action already going on) when the accident happened/occurred (=shorter action that interrupts) ?

15. Richard left (shorter action that interrupts) the house at 1 PM (= afternoon!!!) when his parents were having lunch (longer action that was already going on). No one has seen him since then/Since then, no one has seen him.
Notice the difference in emphasis by placing time first.

10. I didn't see him yesterday, but I did see him (= to emphasize that you saw him indeed) /saw him the day before yesterday.
2 x past simple -> there's no relationship between the two events; two separate occassions in the past

11. and asked him lovingly: .... , my dear (anything endearing, nice nickname)

12.In the year (future), everyone who is alive today will have aged a few years.

13. "I will be 16 in 2003", the toddler miscalculated/The toddler miscalculated that he would be 16 in 2003.

14. He doesn't live; he has never dwelled here.
15. the games will have to be postponed.
