The definite article the is used to refer to a specific person or thing.
(bepaald lidwoord de / het)

The book is on the table.
The teacher is talking.

You can leave out the when you talk about things in general or use a building or place to mean its specific purpose.

They don't like cats.                                               They don't like the cat.
She is in hospital.                                                   I parked in front of the hospital.

If words start with a vowel sound (klinker) you use an:
