Past simple VS present perfect

When do you use the Past Simple?
e.g. 'I swam in the sea yesterday.'

Past Simple

Is used when something happened in the past and is finished:

TIP: Look for a time indication in the past

"My dad and I watched football last Sunday."

Present Perfect

Is used when something happened in the past and is:

1. still going on

2. still relevant

3. experience 

I've played football since I was 8 years old.

Look outside! It has just rained.

My dad has flown in a helicopter once.
