Onderdelen in deze les

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

             Learning Intention:

What?  We are learning how to write the names and chemical formulas for covalent bonds.
Why? In order to use the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature correctly.

             Success Criteria

I can:
-  Identify the properties of covalent bonds.
-Develop formulas for covalent bonds
- Identify the IUPAC nomenclature for covalent bonds when given a covalent compound formula

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Why does sharing e- make sense here?

Bond forms when atoms SHARE electrons.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Covalent bonds are only between Nonmetals/Nonmetals  OR Nonmetals / Metalloids.
WHY?
notice the # of lines.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Write Formula
from a
Covalent
Name

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

BCl

3
1. Write names of elements in the same order as the formula.
2. Add -ide to the  second element.
3. Add the corresponding
prefix to both elements telling how many atoms of that element are in the formula.
STEPS:
Boron Chlorine
Boron Chloride
Boron trichloride
No need for mono- on first element.
