Republic: government without a king

Assembly: a group of people who make decisions (like our Tweede Kamer) 

Bills: laws 

Veto: a vote that stops a bill right away 

Consul: most important leader in the republic

Senate: assembly of rich and powerful families

How did it work?

The senate voted on daily decisions. The senators debated on each decision.

Consuls lead the army and governed areas far from Rome. 

The two consuls ruled only for a year so they never had too much power.

aristocrats / 'nobiles' could become senator. 

Normal people voted for consuls, but your vote counted more if you were rich.

Roman politics

History of the Roman empire can be divided into three periods:

Kingdom (8th century BC - 509 BC): Rome was still a city-state, like Athens. It was ruled by a king/monarch and the senate.

Republic (509 BC - 27 BC): The king was replaced with two consuls. The senate was still in charge.

Empire (27 BC - 476 AD): An emperor (imperator) replaced the consuls. He was assisted by the senate (see: 3.4).
