Introductie

Part of the British Values series, In this lesson, we look at feelings. We focus on naming feelings and think about the feelings of others through the use of a picture book, 'The Dot by Peter Reynolds'.

Instructies

We have designed our British Values lessons so that teachers can pick up and teach a topic to their class with confidence.
We have chosen to use a balance of interactive tools and 'unplugged' creative activities.

Lessons can be taught directly from the LessonUp slides but work best when children have access to the pupil app
Lessonup.app

If you have any questions or want to know more, please do get in touch. We'd love to show you how LessonUp can make 'Every Class Better Than The Last'

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

This lesson supports British Values. It can be used to compliment your existing schemes of learning or as an ad-hoc session.
It also links with the PSHE Association Programme of Study for KS1:
L1. about what rules are, why they are needed, and why different rules are needed
L4. about the different groups they belong to
L5. about the different roles and responsibilities people have in their community
for different situations
In this lesson, we will:
  • Name some of our feelings
  • Think about how to respect the feelings of other children

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

This lesson may bring up some issues which fall within your safeguarding policy.
Choose an emotion
Choose a body part

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

In this activity, children will choose an emotion and then try and show the emotion using one of their body parts (chosen from spinner two).

The activity can help children to understand that they can show emotions in their body and actions as well as their facial expressions.

Add or edit the spinners by clicking on the cogwheel so that they reflect vocabulary that is being used in your classroom.
What words can we use to describe our feelings?

Slide 4 - Woordweb

Use this mind map to remind children about emotion vocabulary. You may wish to use a wordbank to support this.
Once children have responded, sort the emotion words into groups; happy, sad, etc. Can they add further words to the groups? Which words are more/less powerful?
Listen to The Dot by Peter H Reynolds

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

The Dot by Peter H Reynolds is a brilliant story. If you do not have a copy of the book in your classroom library, you can find some versions online.

Slide 6 - Poll

Check in with pupil understanding by using a poll to gauge understanding.
Why does Vashti's teacher put the dot in a frame behind her desk?

Slide 7 - Woordweb

Gather some ideas from the children about why they think the dot was framed and placed behind the teacher's desk.
You may wish to use a word bank or scaffold prompts to support the children in gathering their ideas to share.
