Modernization
At the end of the 19th century many things changed in Europe (and North America):
Public transport got upgraded --> it was easier for people to move from one place to another
Communication improved --> news spread faster because of newspapers, radio and film
Mass production
made it possible for factories to produce faster and cheaper
