Emojis around the world
A waving hand (๐Ÿ‘‹) is probably the most innocent hand gesture westerners can think of. As such, itโ€™s difficult to imagine it meaning anything else but โ€œhelloโ€ or โ€œgoodbyeโ€. However, itโ€™s best to avoid it in China, South Korea, and Pakistan.

While similar to the western meaning of โ€œgoodbyeโ€, the hand wave in China has a significantly stronger meaning and is often used to break up relationships and friendships, especially in chat apps.

Emoji bloopers (6 minutes)

Have you ever misused an emoji or have you misinterpreted one yourself? Discuss in groups of 2-3.
Example follow-up questions are:
  • What emoji?
  • How was it misunderstood?
  • Was the effect positive or negative?
  • How did you solve this?
  • Have you changed how you use the emoji?
I will ask a few students to share.
