What is the plan for today?

REPEAT
  • Pressure areas

ATACAMA DESERT

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

LAST WEEK'S GOALS
  1. You can explain in 3 steps why there is precipitation in low pressure areas (GG 55).
  2. You can explain in 3 steps why it’s dry in high pressure areas (GG 55).
  3. With the use of Buys Ballot’s law you can draw the correct wind direction between 2 pressure areas anywhere in the world (GG53 + Notes).
  4. You can give the name and location of the 7 permanent pressure areas in the world (GG 54).
  5. You can give the name and location of the 6 permanent wind systems in the world (GG 54).

THE BUYS
BALLOT LAW
  1. Air always flows from high pressure (maximum) to low pressure (minimum) over the earth’s surface.
  2. Wind does not flow in a straight line from H to L, but deflects towards the right on the northern hemisphere and the left on the southern hemisphere.

How about Chile?

Dry north and wet south?

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

TODAY'S GOALS
  1. You can name 3 reasons that cause drought in the Atacama desert.
  2. You can explain how mountain ranges influence precipitation by using the words windward side and leeward side (GG 49).
  3. You can explain how ocean currents influence precipitation.

RELIEF & PRECIPITATION

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

CHILE
  • Use the extra assigment about pressure areas -> question 4.
  • Explain why the north of Chile is very dry, while the south is very wet. Use the terms prevailing wind, windward side and leeward side

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

OPEN G49
You can explain how mountain ranges influence precipitation by using the words windward side and leeward side (G49).

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

You can explain how mountain ranges influence precipitation by using the words windward side and leeward side (GG 49).

Slide 17 - Tekstslide

OCEAN CURRENTS

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Warm current -> warmer air
Cold current -> colder air

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

Use the map above.
 Explain why the west coast of South America is a lot drier than the east coast.

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

OCEAN CURRENTS
Warm current -> more evaporation
Cold current -> less evaporation

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

Temperature factor:

6. Location of
    mountain
    ranges
Mountain ranges can block prevailing winds, so they can be a dividing line between 2 climates.

ANSWER THESE GOALS
IN YOUR NOTEBOOK

  1. You can name 3 reasons that cause drought in the Atacama desert.
  2. You can explain how mountain ranges influence precipitation by using the words windward side and leeward side (GG 49).
  3. You can explain how ocean currents influence precipitation.

Let's go!
  • Make 6 + 7 of C3.3 in your workbook

Rules while working:
  • You are allowed to work together

Finished?
  • Work on the list of knowledge- and skills
  • The next lesson is the last lesson before the GPW
