Please explain in your own words what migration means.

Reasons for migration

Economic

People may migrate, because they can't earn enough money in their home-country.

Social

People may migrate, because another group of people opresses (onderdrukken) or discriminates (discrimineren) against them.

Political

People may migrate, because their government (regering) draws up laws (wetten) that are not fair.

Environmental

People may migrate because their country has lots of waste (afval) everywhere and there is no one to get rid of it.

 Look at the photos on the next slide and write down as many push-factors and pull-factors as you can think of.

push-factor: reason for someone to leave their country.

pull-factor: reason for someone to move to a certain country.

Alternative activity

In groups, find example photos on the internet which shows why someone might leave their country. Look at current situations in the news.

Under the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention, a refugee

is defined as someone with a "well-founded fear of being persecuted (vervolging) for reasons of

race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion"

and who "owing to such fear are unwilling to return to their country”.
