Grammar: Would & used to
To talk about habits and repeated actions in the past that no longer happen, we can use: used todidn't  use to and would(n't).

- Used to is used for habits, repeated actions and states
- We don't use would to talk about a past state, it is only used for repeated actions

Used to
We say used to + full verb to talk about:
1. repeated actions in the past that no longer happen 
2. states (of being) that are not true anymore (be, believe, live)

Examples:
- She used to smoke, but not anymore. (habit)
- We used to live in New York when I was a kid. (state)
- When I was at uni, I used to play tennis every weekend. (action)

She used to eat pizza every Saturday.
adverbs of frequency
They always used to go the seaside whenever they could.
The adverb of frequency comes before used to.

Would
We can also use would + full verb to talk about repeated past actions that don't happen any more.

  1. The use of would, gives it a nostalgic feeling.
  2. It is NOT used in negative sentences or questions!
  3. Would for past habits is slightly more formal than used to. You often hear it in stories.

Would is never used for a state:

"I would live in london when I was a little girl"
"I used to live in london when I was a little girl"

"You wouldn't take the bus to school?"
"Didn't you use to take the bus to school?"

- Used to is used for habits, repeated actions and states
