Goal of this lesson: I can express expectations and resolutions in the upcoming year

Using two forms of the future tense:

Will + base form and be + going + infinitive.

First part of this lesson refreshing the grammar

 later on we ‘ll split up in breakout rooms and conversate with each other. 

In English of course.

  

Basic rules: stay out of the chat: use the hand

What forms of future tense are there again?

1 Will + base form: I will manage ( ik ga het redden)

  2 Be + going + infinitive: I am going to manage

3 Diary future ; present continuous: I am having dinner with my wife tonight

4 Timetables: My train leaves at ten pm.

So this lesson we ‘ll use the first two

FORM

both forms make use of an auxiliary. So making questions and negations are easy:

  He will see his teacher next week.

He will not see his teacher next week. 

Informal: 

He won’t see his teacher next week.

Will he see his teacher next week?

FORM

He is going to see his teacher next week.

He is not going to seee his teacher next week. 

Is he going to see his teacher next week? 

In informal conversational English

 you’ll come across gonna instead of going to. 

When apping your peers, be my guest. But not in our lessons, nor in our writings

Sometimes the two forms Wll and going to are interchangeable. But sometimes there are minor differences in use:

1 planned/unplanned

2 observation or opinion based predictions

Sometimes the two forms Will and going to are

1 Planned or unplanned: when there is a plan, made before, use going to unplanned (instant decisions) use will.

I am going to have a holiday in my own country this year.

 (you already made this decision)

This bag is too heavy for you. I will carry it for you.

(je besluit het nu)

2 A prediction based on something we can see (or hear) now: 

Corona virus numbers are still climbing. Lockdown is going to last a little longer, I’m afraid.

 

A prediction based on opinion. 

I think corona measures will stay with us till the end of summer

always use will when

When it is not just a prediction but a future fact

 use will.

 

The sun will rise tomorrow. 

(saying here that the sun is going to rise tomorrow sounds as if the sun had a choice)

always use will when

For promises / requests / refusals / offers 

I'll help you tomorrow, if you like. 

In this period of year you hear a lot of New Year’s resolutions (goede voornemens) 

They are expressed in will. (promises to yourself)

Now practise yourselves: share in groups of five your

1 expectations for this year. Could be in your personal life, your public life (can you go to the cinema, library et cetera), your school or work.
