Past Simple and Time Expressions
Time expressions such as 'yesterday', 'last week', and 'in 2010' are commonly used with the past simple tense to indicate when an action occurred.

What is the Past Simple?
The past simple is a tense used to talk about completed actions in the past. It is formed by adding '-ed' to regular verbs.
For example: 'walk' becomes 'walked'.

Dani crossed a boundry last week.
Pizza used to be my favourite food.
I loved seeing Ghost live in Amsterdam.

Irregular Verbs
Irregular verbs do not follow the '-ed' rule. They have unique forms in the past simple. 
For example: 'go' becomes 'went'.
I go to the store -----> I went to the store.
I eat breakfast ----> I eight breakfast.
I drive to work everyday. ------> I drove to work everyday.

Past Simple of 'To Be'
The past simple of the verb 'to be' is 'was' for singular subjects and 'were' for plural subjects. For example: 'I was tired.' 'They were happy.'
  • I was tired.

  • We were tired.
  • They were tired.

Sentence Formation
To form sentences in the past simple, use the subject followed by the past simple verb and any additional information. 
For example: 'I visited my grandparents last weekend.'

Reorder the words to form a correct sentence in the past simple: 'yesterday / I / to the beach / went'.

Past Simple Questions
To form questions in the past simple, use the auxiliary verb 'did' followed by the subject and the base form of the verb. 
For example: 'Did you watch the movie?'

Past Simple Negative
To form negative sentences in the past simple, use the auxiliary verb 'did not' (didn't) followed by the base form of the verb. 
For example: 'I didn't go to the party.'
