Introduction

In this lesson, the students will learn about parody news outlets like the Onion or the Dutch ‘De Speld’, and about parody accounts on social media. They discuss what is acceptable and unacceptable when parodying a real person or organization, research existing parody social media accounts and create a fictional parody account themselves.

Instructions

  • Introduction: Students learn about parody news outlets and social media accounts. (5 min.)
  • Next step: Students research different parody social media accounts, and discuss what is acceptable and unacceptable parody. (15 min.)
  • In practice: Students create their own fake parody account and write posts for the account. (20 min.)
  • Evaluation: Students present their parody accounts to their peers, and discuss amongst themselves how clear it is that this is in fact a parody. (10 min.)
