The Passive
  • Object is important:
Good cheese is produced in the Netherlands.

  • Subject is not important: 
Emails are delivered every morning. 
(It doesn't matter who delivers them). 

  • Subject is obvious:
Good grades were received for the previous test. 
(It is clear that students received the grades).

The Passive
  • Formula: to be + V3 (+ by whom)

  • Present Simple Passive: am/is/are + V3
The grass is cut at weekends. 
The grass is cut at the weekends by our neighbors. 

  • Past Simple Passive: was/were + V3
Last year, lots of new books were written
Last year, a new book was written by this Nobel laureate.
