Past Simple

  • Past facts 
- World War II finished in 1945. 
- James graduated from school 15 years ago. 
- Yesterday I watched a great show on TV. 

  • Regular, repeated past actions
- When I stuied at university I traveled by bike every day. 
- At school she changed friends regularly. 
- In my home country I often ate homemade food. 

  • Sequence of past actions
- This morning I had a coffee, read the news and went to work. 
- She went shopping, did some housework and visited friends on Saturday.

Past Simple
  • Positive
- Ved (regular): Yesterday my friends cooked a fantastic Italian meal. 
- V2 (irregular): I bought some natual juice to go with the meal. 

  • Negative
- Didn't + V (regular): My friends didn't cook Chinese.
- Didn't + V (irregular): I didn't buy any coffee as we had plenty. 
                       
  • Questions
- Did + S + V (regular): Did they cook lasagne? 
- Did + S + V (irregular): Did you buy any tea? 

S - Subject - the person or thing that does the action
V- Verb - the action
