WHAT DO WE MEAN BY CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT?

Classroom management is crucial for a successful lesson. It allows students to focus on the content and enables the teacher to teach effectively. Additionally, it creates a positive atmosphere in the classroom. You can influence classroom management by:
  • Setting goals
  • Creating engagement
  • Establishing clear rules
  • Providing positive feedback
As a teacher, you play the most important role in managing the classroom. LessonUp has designed some features to assist and support you in doing so. In this lesson plan, we will cover these features.

SETTING GOALS

By clearly stating your learning objectives, students become more aware of what they are learning, and of the relevance of the subject matter. This increases their engagement.

CREATING ENGAGEMENT

This is probably not news to you; by adding interactive elements to your lesson, you increase student engagement. This can be done in various ways, such as using the spinner to question, seeking opinions through polls, or assessing knowledge with quiz questions or open questions.

SETTING RULES during the LESSON

Setting clear rules brings clarity and order in the classroom. In LessonUp, you can use certain features to establish specific rules in the class. For example, with the function 'Show to student.' When this function is turned on, students are expected to work independently, but when it is turned off, the lesson becomes a classic in-person lesson in the classroom.

With the 'Show for student' function, students see the full layout of slides, quiz questions, open questions, and the mind map, just like they appear on the interactive whiteboard. If you prefer to focus on your own (in-person) classroom explanation or on the interactive whiteboard, just turn off this function. Students will see nothing more than an input window on their screens:
If you prefer to focus on the task, assignment, or question, turn it back on. This way, students can work independently on their own devices. This is what they will see:

SETTING RULES WITH THE HELP OF COMPONENTS

Traffic Light
With the traffic light, you can easily set rules within your lesson. Once students get used to it, it can help maintain order in the classroom. An example of rules with the traffic light:
  • Red for working in complete silence, no questions allowed;
  • Orange when questions to the teacher or working together and discussing softly are allowed;
  • Green when students can work together at a normal volume.
Timer
Use the timer to indicate how long students can work on a task. For example, while solving an equation, a reading comprehension task, or during a mind map about a historical concept.
Raise Hand
Did you know that students can also raise their hand within LessonUp? You need to activate this feature during the lesson by clicking on the hand icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen.

By asking students to raise their hand digitally, you have more control on when to answer their questions. This helps maintain order during an in-person lesson, and is ideal for hybrid or remote learning.

PROVIDING POSITIVE FEEDBACK

Giving positive feedback enhances student motivation and creates a pleasant atmosphere in the classroom. Ideally, this should be done in person, in the classroom.

Go to your lesson report and ensure that students can view your (positive) feedback even during homework assignments. You can locate this option in the reporting section under the 'student' category. For each question, you can write a comment that will be visible in your students' accounts.

You have learned about some features that can assist you in classroom management. Of course, these features alone are not enough; as a teacher, you play the most critical role for your students.

The next module is about digital assessments. Part 1 covers the possibilities of digital assessments, and in Part 2, we provide practical tips for creating a digital assessment.
