HOW DO HUMANS IMPACT THE OCEAN?

Slide 1 - Slide

This course provides five lessons on the different ways we impact the ocean. The aim is to learn about some ways we all impact the ocean and discuss how we can address this.
Lesson 1 - What is an ocean ecosystem?

Slide 2 - Slide

This lesson covers the key components of a marine ecosystem, such as habitat and food sources.

Learning activities:
    Understand ecosystems and the key components.
    Research and draw life cycles of different species.

Lesson 2 - How does plastic pollution impact the ocean?

Slide 3 - Slide

This lesson covers:
    What is plastic pollution?
    What is abandoned, lost and discarded (ALD) fishing gear?
    Why is plastic an issue?

Learning activities:
    Explain ALD fishing gear.
    Research what fishing gear is made of.
    Discuss what will happen if we don’t stop plastic pollution.

Lesson 3 - How does chemical pollution impact the ocean?

Slide 4 - Slide

This lesson covers the different types of chemical pollution that find their way into the ocean.

Learning activities:
    Research chemicals that go down the drain.
    Discuss how we can reduce our negative impact on the ocean and marine wildlife.

Lesson 4 - How does noise pollution impact marine wildlife?

Slide 5 - Slide

This lesson discusses the different sources of noise pollution and how it impacts marine wildlife.

Learning activities:
    Research species that rely on sonar to navigate. Discuss how noise pollution would impact each stage of their lifecycle and ability to survive.
    Discuss how can reduce the impact of noise pollution on the ocean and marine wildlife.

Lesson 5 - What are the impacts of illegal fishing / overfishing?

Slide 6 - Slide

This lesson discusses the impact of illegal fishing, by-catch and overfishing of species.

Learning activities:
    Create a poster showing the impacts of overfishing/by-catch on species.
    Research how we can reduce the impacts of overfishing and demand for fish.
