You use the past simple to talk about actions that happened in the past.

How to create the past simple?
Regular verbs
verb + ed
I (to work) ---> I worked
She (to play) ---> She played

Irregular verbs
2nd form (Simple Past)
They (to go) ---> They went
We (to swim) ---> We swam

Extra rules:
When a verb ends with an 'e':  +d              -> I loved

When a verb ends with a vowel and consonant
the consonant is usually doubled             -> Stop = Stopped

When a word ends with a consonant and a 'y': +y becomes +ied            -> study = studied

When a word ends with a vowel and a 'y': +ed      
-> stay = stayed
