Take a look at these sentences.

"Cas cleans the room."

"Lisa baked a cake."

Who does the action?"

Can we change these sentences to focus on the action instead of the person?"

Discuss with your neighbour for 1 minute. 

"The room is cleaned by Cas."

"The cake was baked by Lisa."

1. Work in pairs and compare the two versions of the stories.              2. underline the passive sentences in the second version and identify the verb forms.

present simple passive

Piet cleans the  bedroom.

The bedroom is cleaned. (by Piet).

De slaapkamer wordt schoongemaakt. (door Piet).

am/is/are + voltooid deelwoord

Not important WHO or WHAT does the action.

past simple passive

- Lieve bought a bicycle.

- A bike was bought. (by Lieve).

Een fiets werd gekocht. (door Lieve).

In groups (of 3 or 4)

1. Four groups will focus on present simple passive and the other four focus on past simple passive.

2. Each group will create a short story using the following prompts:

GROUPS WITH Present Simple Passive:

In your school, many things happen every day. Describe what happens around the school, using the passive voice.

Example Story:

"Lessons are taught by different teachers. Sports equipment is used by students. The cafeteria is cleaned every afternoon."

GROUPS WITH  Past Simple Passive:

Last weekend, there was a school party . Describe what happened, using the past simple passive.

Example Story:

"The party was organized by the student council. Invitations were sent by the teachers. A DJ was hired, and decorations were put up by volunteers."

Task: Each group will write a short story (8 sentences) and include at least 4 sentences in the passive voice.
