The Past Simple
Je gebruikt de past simple als iets in het verleden is gebeurd en het belangrijk is wanneer het is gebeurd. In de zin staan dan vaak woorden als last night, in 2015, this morning, five minutes ago, when I was young.
 

  • We talked on the phone last night.
  • I left my house half an hour ago.

Bij regelmatige werkwoorden eindigt de past simple op -ed.
Onregelmatige werkwoorden hebben een eigen vorm.
In ontkennende en vragende zinnen gebruik je didof didn't+ hele werkwoord.

Let op! Soms verandert de spelling bij regelmatige werkwoorden:
werkwoord eindigt op -e                                         → alleen -d toevoegen
to arrange      arranged
werkwoord eindigt op medeklinker + -y            → medeklinker + -ied
to try          tried
werkwoord eindigt op korte klinker                     → medeklinkerverdubbelen + -ed
to plan      planned
werkwoord met meer lettergrepen en eindigt op -l           → -lled
to travel        travelled
