different purposes of scientific research
- information gathering:
Exploratory: e.g., discovering, uncovering, exploring
Descriptive: e.g., gathering info, describing, summarizing
- theory testing:
Explanatory: e.g., testing and understanding causal relations
Predictive: e.g., predicting what might happen in various scenarios

Slide 3 - Slide

what's the
difference?
Theory testing

Slide 4 - Slide

ethology (research into animal behaviour)
ethologist

research question: (in Artis) what is the most common behaviour of my animal

Slide 5 - Slide

How to....
- observe the animal for 10 minutes
- make an ethogram ( a list of the 10 most seen behaviours)

Slide 6 - Slide

Then....
- use your ethogram to make a protocol
- a chart in which you record an animals behaviour
- every 20 seconds you write down the behaviour (it has to be part of your ethogram!)

Slide 7 - Slide

next...
- count the behaviours per category (of your ethogram)
- make a graph

Slide 8 - Slide

Slide 9 - Slide

What is the right order?
A
Histogram - ethogram - protocol
B
Ethogram - protocol - histogram
C
Protocol - ethogram - histogram
D
Histogram - protocol - ethogram

Slide 10 - Quiz

let’s practice
- first write down all the behaviours
- then we make an ethogram together
- we watch the video again an make a protocol
- we count all the behaviours
- we make a histogram together
