different purposes of scientific research 

- information gathering:

Exploratory: e.g., discovering, uncovering, exploring

Descriptive: e.g., gathering info, describing, summarizing

- theory testing:

Explanatory: e.g., testing and understanding causal relations

Predictive: e.g., predicting what might happen in various scenarios

How to....

- observe the animal for 10 minutes

- make an ethogram ( a list of the 10 most seen behaviours)

Then....

- use your ethogram to make a protocol 

- a chart in which you record an animals behaviour

- every 20 seconds you write down the behaviour (it has to be part of your ethogram!)

- count the behaviours per category (of your ethogram)

- make a graph
