Comparatives

We gebruiken comparatives om dingen met elkaar te vergelijken

Comparatives; hoe maak je ze?

Hoofdregel:

Bij korte woorden voeg je alleen -er toe. Bijvoorbeeld: shorter, sicker

Bij lange woorden zet je er more voor. Bijvoorbeeld: more interesting, more delicious.

Comparatives; let op

Bij 2-lettergreep woorden die eindigen op -y voeg je ook -er toe en verandert bovendien de spelling. 

Bijvoorbeeld: luckier, happier, easier

Comparatives; let op

Bij bijwoorden (adverbs) die eindigen op -ly zet je er altijd more voor. 

Bijvoorbeeld: more slowly, more easily, more simply.

(not) as + adjective + as

Deze constructie kan je ook maken om dingen te vergelijken

Bijvoorbeeld:

He is not as smart as her (hij is niet zo slim als haar)

The movie is as interesting as the book.(de film is even interessant als het boek)

Superlatives

Gebruiken we om aan te geven dat iets het meeste is.

Superlatives; hoe maak je ze?

Hoofdregel:

Bij korte woorden voeg je alleen -est toe. Bijvoorbeeld: shortest,sickest

Bijvoorbeeld:

He is the tallest guy I know.

Superlatives; hoe maak je ze?

Bij lange woorden zet je er most voor. Bijvoorbeeld: most interesting, most delicious.

Verder zet je meestal the vóór het bijvoeglijk naamwoord of most.

Bijvoorbeeld:

This is the most horrible movie I’ve ever seen!

Too + adjective

Gebruiken we wanneer iets meer is dan wat we willen of prettig vinden.

Bijvoorbeeld:

It is too dark here

(not) + adjective + enough

Gebruiken we wanneer iets minder is dan wat we willen of prettig vinden.

Bijvoorbeeld:

It is not dark enough here.
