Fractions
Introduction

Fractions are parts out of a whole. The whole or total amount is always the
bottom of the fraction. The part you are interested in is the top of the fraction.
The line represents a division.

There is 1/4 off the price of a DVD that costs £20. What does it cost now?
First find 1/4 as we did above but then take the 1/4 off using subtraction.
20 ÷ 4 = 5     5 × 1 = 5 This is 1/4 but we need to take this off the original price.20 – 5 = 15 so the new price is £15.
You may also need to use this technique if you see words such as
