We noemen deze zinnen if-zinnen, of voorwaardelijke zinnen.
Ze bestaan uit twee delen: een hoofdzin en een if-zin.
De if-zin drukt altijd een voorwaarde uit en begint met if.
If the sun shines, my ice cream melts.
Je kunt de twee gedeeltes ook omdraaien:
My ice cream melts if the sun shines (dan geen comma).
Conditionals - types
Zero conditional:
  • The result is a fact
  • Present simple in if-clause and main clause

Example:
If it rains, the streets become wet.

  • Prediction of the result, it is probably going to happen
  • Present simple in if-clause and will + infinitive in main clause

Example:

rains, I will stay home.

  • The result is made up (=verzonnen)
  • Past simple in if-clause and would + infinitive in main clause
