Past Perfect
  • When: we use the past perfect to refer to an actions that was finished before another action in the past (usually past simple).
  • How: the past perfect is formed by HAD + past participle



The thief had escaped before they entered the house.
After he had burnt the evidence, he threw the ashes into the bin. 
  • Signal words: when, before, as soon as, after. 
We had talked to everyone before the party was over.

ON: surfaces, public transport, roads/streets/rivers.


IN: general places, cities/countries, things inside a space. 


AT: specific locations, particular places. 

It is on the table.

We live at 2 Apple Road.
The thief was in jail for two weeks.
He is standing on Baker Street. 
London is on the Thames.
