Electricity

Slide 1 - Slide

Lesson outcomes
  • Tell the other students what electricity is.
  • Explain why you can turn the light off in English.

Slide 2 - Slide

Lessonplan
  • Activate prior knowledge
  • Explanation: How to make an electric circuit
  • Describe an instruction how to make an electric circuit
  • Compare your instruction to other instructions
  • Make a vlog in which you explain how a light turns on and off

Slide 3 - Slide

When do we use electricity?

Slide 4 - Slide

Do you know.....
How do we generate energy?

Slide 5 - Open question

Slide 6 - Video

Open circuit diagram

Slide 7 - Slide

Can you name another energy source?

Slide 8 - Slide

An electric circuit
Electricity only flows in a closed circuit.
An electric circuit at least has:
       - A power source,
       - an electrical appliance,
       - connecting wires (copper)
Switch off: If the current is interrupted somewhere.

Slide 9 - Slide

Current, you need a closed circuit to let an electronic device work
Current: the amount of electricity that flows in a circuit.

The current is the same size everywhere in a series connection.

You could say that a client pays a powerstation for 'pumping enegy'. Technically they dont make elektricity.

Slide 10 - Slide

The circuit diagram
To draw a circuit diagram we use symbols for the various components. Each component has its own symbol.

Slide 12 - Video

Conductors

Substances that electrical currents can flow through easily

Can you name a conductor?
Insulators

Substances that do not allow electrical current to pass through them (or only very poorly)

Can you name a insulator?

Slide 13 - Slide

5 Electrical insulators
  • Rubber

  • Glass

  • Oil

  • Diamond

  • Dry wood
5 electrical conductors
  • Silver
  • Gold

  • Copper
  • Steel
  • Sea water (The higher the salt content, the lower the resistance. Hoe hoger het zoutgehalte, hoe lager de weerstand).

Assignment: Descripe in an instruction how to make an electric circuit. (in English, 10 minutes)
Work together with two or three students.
Draw (Use the standard symbols)a simple electric circuit and describe how it works in your own words.
Use the words: battery, switch, wire, lightbulb, conductor, and insulator.

Slide 15 - Slide

Compare your instruction to other instructions (5 minutes)
Now that you have finished, you can compare your work with the other instructions.

What improvements would you consider after reviewing them?

Is your drawing sufficient to understand the electric circuit, or is your instruction necessary for clarity?

Slide 16 - Slide

Assignment: Make a vlog (in English) (Preparation and creation 15 minutes)
Make a vlog in which you explain, based on the drawing you made today and the instructions, how a light turns on and off. Use your imagination; you probably have a light you can turn on and off during the vlog. Your vlog should last 1 to 1.5 minutes, and submit it on Teams.

You can work together as long as both of you are speaking and appear in the vlog.
You need to show your drawing/instruction in the vlog.
