The Native Americans had initially won the debate concerning the Dakota pipeline, stating that the pipeline, a project of the Texas-based corporation Energy Transfer Partners, threatened the water supply and cultural heritage and would destroy sacred lands. Five years ago, however, US President Donald Trump signed executive actions to advance the construction of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines. Two years ago he also authorized the reduction of the 1.35-million acre Bears Ears National Monument by 85 percent, an area with many tribal archaeological sites. Last year US President-elect Joe Biden immediately cancelled the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline on his first day in office.
