Voor sommige van deze woorden moet je nagaan of je een werkwoord voor enkelvoud of meervoud moet gebruiken. Dat hangt af van de context van de zin.
Fish - Sheep - Deer
Mouse --> Mice
Goose --> Geese
Ox --> Oxen
Louse --> lice
A fish .....................(to swim) in the sea.
Fresh water fish  ................(to live) in ponds and lakes.

Let op: na 'a' en na een telwoord (two, three, etc) gebruik je 'pair' 

A pair of trousers         (niet 'a trousers') 
A pair of jeans        (niet 'a jeans')
Two pairs of shorts         (niet 'two shorts')
Three pairs of scissors        (niet 'three scissors')

Bij combinaties met getallen gebruik je ook vaak meervoud:

  • It costs 20 euros (dus niet 20 euro!)
  • I'm 15 years old

Als het onderwerp meervoud is, is het object (lijdend voorwerp) vaak ook meervoud:

  • We had to put on our coats
  • Both boys had brought their bikes

Sommige woorden hebben in ev en mv dezelfde vorm
1. Woorden op -ese bij nationaliteiten

Chinese:      a Chinese  - all Chinese
Japanese:     a Japanese - all Japanese

Een enkele keer ook bij nationaliteiten die niet op -ese eindigen zoals:
Swiss:           a Swiss - the Swiss
