Prefixes and suffixes are sets of letters that we add to the beginning of a word (prefix) or at the end of a word (suffix). They change the meaning of a word.

Find out the rule

Example A: Don't get me wrong, I like the idea that people want to visit my city. It's just that I absolutely dislike all the mess they leave behind.

Example B: It's a treat to watch Arsenal play so well nowadays! I watched the replay of that second goal five times.

Ask SS to read these 2 examples and what the differences are

like-dislike (dis- = not/the opposite)

play-replay (re- = again/back)

Prefixes

What are prefixes?    

Prefixes

Letters you place BEFORE a word

They change the meaning of the word

Examples: 

non- /un-/ im-/ il-/ in-/ ir-/ dis-

re-

mis-            

These prefixes all mean 'not' or 'the opposite'

non-             sense -> nonsense

un-               used -> unused

im-               possible -> impossible

il-                  legal -> illegal

in-                compatible -> incompatible

ir-                 responsible -> irresponsible

dis-             appear -> disappear

re- means 'again', 'back' or 'in response to'

act -> react

play -> replay

turn -> return

mis- is used to give a negative meaning

place -> misplace

understand -> misunderstand

dis- is used to give an opposite or negative meaning

like -> dislike

appear -> disappear

Are there any rules?

Not really. You can only study prefixes by studying the words they belong to. Sometimes it is easy, because you already know a lot of them. Sometimes you have to look them up in a dictionary.

Are there any rules?

There are minor rules for spelling though.

ir- is always followed by an r

im- is always followed by an m or p

a- is always followed by a consonant (medeklinker)

This does not work the other way around.

Suffixes

What are suffixes?

Suffixes

Letter that go AFTER a word

They change the meaning of a word

Examples:

-er

-ing/ -ment

-ness

-er: comparison / the person/thing that does the action

fast -> faster

slow -> slower

teach -> teacher

rap -> rapper

-ing/-ment to change a verb into a noun

-ment (a product, material or a verb):

move -> movement

-ing (a verb):

write -> writing (note: drop the -e)

-ness to change an adverb or adjective into a noun

friendly -> friendliness

sad -> sadness
