Introduction
Blood that flows away from the organs contains a lot of
carbon dioxide and other waste substances.

These substances are removed from the body.
Biologists call this process excretion.

Slide 9 - Slide

3.4 Excretion
Excretion happens in different organs.
Carbon dioxide, for example, is excreted by the lungs.

Most other waste substances are excreted by the kidneys.

They remove the waste from the blood and turn it into urine.
You pee out the urine, which makes the waste leave your body.

Slide 11 - Video

💧 Function of the kidneys

- Remove waste substances from the blood
- Control the amount of fluid in your body

Slide 12 - Slide

🩸 Blood vessels near the kidneys

Renal artery: oxygen-rich blood with waste substances → to the kidney

Renal vein: cleaned blood
→back to the body

🏗️Parts of the kidney

Renal cortex & renal medulla: filter the blood

Renal pelvis: collects the urine

Slide 14 - Slide

🛤️ Urinary tract: order
2 Ureters → carry urine to the bladder
Bladder → temporarily stores the urine
1 Urethra → carries urine out of the body
"ureter to the bladder"
"urethra: pee away"

Slide 15 - Slide

💡 Note

Urine = waste substances + water

The more you drink, the lighter the urine
