The image of the Dutch abroad (1)

• Rather liberal mentality
• Things are well organised in the country
• A lot of work: everybody has a job

• We are too direct: 'He talks like a Dutch uncle' = issueing frank, harsh or severe comments 
• British people see us as unreliable: ‘If that’s true, then I’m a Dutchman!'
  
• Americans think we are really stingy and miserly: 'To go Dutch': splitting the invoice at a restaurant

• In Dutch, we use: macho, sombrero, siësta, poncho, mojito, salsa, alligator, cargo, embargo, escapade, guerrilla, lasso, patio, sigaar, sigaret,...
