11.4 You look like..
You will learn why you look like your parents, which characteristics are hereditary and what the causes are for congenital disorders.

Cell> nucleus> chromosomes > DNA> gene

Chromosomes = thread-like structures, mainly composed of DNA
DNA = DNA contains the blueprint for all hereditary characteristics of an organism

Each cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes; a total of 46 chromosomes

Genome = all chromosomes together

Why you look like your parents
A cell of 46 chromosomes splits into two reproductive cells.

Reproductive cells contain 23 chromosomes

During fertilisation, the cells fuse.

Development of a boy or a girl
An egg cell always passes on an X chromosome

A sperm cell either passes on an X chromosome or a Y chromosome
