Early 19th Century Novel

Jane Austen (1775 - 1817)

• Most important novelist of early 19th century
• Elegant + witty studies of young women
  
• Focusing on love and common sense

Most important novels:

• Sense and Sensibilty / Emma /  Persuasion 
  
• Pride and Prejudice
  

• Born in Steventon, daughter of an Anglican priest
• Good education (not customary for girls)
• Happy childhood, reading was encouraged (Fielding and Richardson)
• Started writing when she was 15
• Never married, isolated from other authors

Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have 5 daughters, who will not inherit anything.

Mrs. Bennet's main focus is to get her daughters married.

mr. Bingley and mr. Darcy arrive at Longbourn.

Jane is sick at Netherfields, Elizabeth goes to take care of her.

mr. Collins (cousin of Mr. Bennet) comes to Longbourn and later proposes to Elizabeth.

Wickham arrives at Longbourn.

He speaks to Elizabeth about his association with mr. Darcy.

mr. Bingley and his company leave Netherfield for London, leaving Jane heartbroken.

Jane decides to go to London in the hopes of seeing mr. Bingley there.

Elizabeth's close friend (Charlotte Lucas)

 marries mr. Collins

(subsequently, she will inherit their home when their father dies)

Elizabeth visits Charlotte at her new home. When dining at Lady Catherine de Bourgh, they meet mr. Darcy again.

Mr. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth.

He writes her a letter after she has refused him, to set the record straight.

Jane returns from her aunt and uncle in London. 

They take Elizabeth on a tour of Derbyshire. They decide to have a look at Pemberley (mr. Darcy's estate), seeing as he isn't home...

Lydia and Wickham run away together, ruining her sisters' reputation.

They eventually marry after Darcy's interference.

Bingley returns to Longbourn and proposes to Jane.

Darcy's aunt (Lady Catherine de Bourgh) visits Elizabeth to keep her from marrying Darcy. (even though they are not engaged.)

After talking to his aunt, Darcy proposes to Elizabeth for a second time. She accepts.

Double wedding for Jane and Bingley & Elizabeth and Darcy.

Three love affairs are played out simultaneously in this novel: Who are the loving couples?
