At the end of this lesson you...

... can determine IF you need a dictionary
... find the appropriate translation of an unfamiliar word

WHEN to use your dictionary

* the word is unknown to you

* you are unable to guess the meaning from the rest of the sentence

* it does not look or sound like another word you know

The basics

... the words in your dictionary are always in ALPHABETICAL order

... the guide words at the top of the pages show the first and last words on those pages
... be aware of what kind of word you are looking for (noun, verb, adjective?)
... only the root of the word you are looking for will be in your dictionary

Example of how to read a dictionary

1. Het woord dat je moet opzoeken.

2. De uitspraak van het woord.

3. Het aantal woordsoorten wordt aangeven, in dit geval 2, zowel een zelfstandig naamwoord als een werkwoord.

4. Woordsoort zoals bijvoorbeeld zelfstandig nw, werkwoord, bijvoeglijk naamwoord.

5. Hier vul je het woord in dat je hebt opgezocht.

6. Voorbeelden in het Engels worden schuingedrukt.
