Writing an essay

Example question

Which of the following has technology helped the most?
•    Communication
•    Science
•    Daily life

Write an essay discussing two of the ideas presented above. You should explain which has been helped the most by technology, giving reasons in support of your answer.

Use 220 - 260 words.

Possible layout

* Title: Short and to the point, think of the word limit

* Introduction: Grab reader's attention, what is your essay about?

* Body paragraph #1: Communication

* Body paragraph #2: Daily life

* Conclusion: Consisting of short summary and answer to the question in the assignment.

Pay attention to the following

- Read the entire prompt before you begin writing. You must answer all parts of the prompt: make sure that you fully understand it before proceeding!
- Organize and outline before writing. Always.
- Don’t be afraid to agree or disagree. Just explain WHY you feel the way you do, and always support your opinions.
- Do not write about things which the prompt does not mention. This will cause you to develop ideas that the prompt does not discuss, which will take away from your ability to develop the topic.
- Avoid using the exact words from the prompt. Use synonyms.
- Use linking words and phrases within paragraphs and to link paragraphs.

In pairs, answer the question, write down the letter of the correct option. When you've answered all the questions correctly, you'll be able to make a word with the letters you've found.

• Go to the Magister SW and find the document '4 sample essay assignments'.
• Pick one of the assignments and write the essay.
• Focus on form.
• Exchange with your neighbour.
• Hand in through Magister before Sept. 5th.
