The passive
(is done, was done)

When to use it?
  • When we want to tell an action happened to someone/ something by someone/ something else.
  • Who or want causes the action is often unknown or unimportant. If it is important, we use by.
Active: "My granddad built this house in 1981"
Passive: "This house ....... in 1981"

How to use it?

be (is/was/ etc.) + past participle (3rd row)

(The past participle often end in -ed, but many important verbs are irregular)

1. Active: "Somebody cleans this room every week"
Passive: "This room ..... every day"
2. Active: "Somebody cleaned this room yesterday"
Passive: "This room ..... yesterday"
3. Active: "The room looks nice! Somebody has cleaned it."
Passive:" The room looks nice! It .... been ......"
4. Active: "Somebody is cleaning the room right now"
Passive: "The room .... being.... right now"

Linking words
When to use them?

Linking words connect two parts of a sentence/two sentences/ two paragraphs/ two ideas.

Linking words
Introduction (Introductie): First/ first of all
Addition (Toevoeging): Second/ and/ then/ next/ also/ too/ like/ actually
Opposition & Contradiction (Het tegenovergestelde): However/ while/ instead of/ but
Condition (Voorwaarde): If/ unless/ as long as
Cause (Oorzaak): Because (of)/ due to (the fact)/ since/ this is (the reason) why
Conclusion (Conclusie): So/ finally/ that is why/ in conclusion/overall

Linking words
1. Introduction: "......, I would like to welcome you all."
2. Addition: "I feel sick, .... I can throw up any second."
3. Addition: "You should put your seatbelt on first, ..... start the car."
4. Opposition: "I like frozen yoghurt, ..... I love McFlurry's."
5. Opposition: " ...... you were enjoying your holiday, I was constantly working."
6. Condition: ".... you eat your veggies, we'll go for ice cream afterwards."
7. Condition: "I won't do it ...... you do it."
8. Cause: ".... the rain, the game had been cancelled."
9. Cause: "Why do you keep breaking stuff?! ...... we can't have nice things!"
10. Conclusion: "And ....; the last sentence."

  • To state that something is at it's extreme

  • 1 syllable: -er and -est
  • 2 syllables, when a word ends in -y: -er and -es
  • 2 syllables, in most other cases: more and most
