Past simple (I did)
When to use it?

  • Habits
  • Facts (general truth)
  • Things that happen on a regular basis
Same as the present simple, BUT IN THE PAST!!

  • Something happened and ended in the past

How to recognise/ construct it? 

  • Very often ends in -ed (mind the spelling!)
  • Other times, it is the '1st row'.

Indication of time: yesterday, last week, a year ago, in 1999

When to use it?
  • To indicate that you were in the middle of something at a certain time 



Indication of time: when, while, at the same time

How to recognise / construct it?

  • Was / were + - ing

+ playing , doing,
We / you (p) / they             were 
working, etc.

When to use it?

  • An action in the past has a result now
  • When we talk about a period in the past until now

Focusses on completion.

How to recognise/ use it?

Have/ has + past participle (words ending with -ed or the third row)

I / we / they / you (p) have
+ finished, lost, done,
He / she / it                  has 
been, etc.
