Past simple (I did)

When to use it?

• Habits
  
• Facts (general truth)
  
• Things that happen on a regular basis

Same as the present simple, BUT IN THE PAST!!

• Something happened and ended in the past
  

Past simple (I did)

How to recognise/ construct it? 

• Very often ends in -ed (mind the spelling!)
  
• Other times, it is the '1st row'.

Indication of time: yesterday, last week, a year ago, in 1999

Past simple (I did)

1. J.K. Rowling ... (to write) the Harry Potter series
   
2. My brother and I .... (to laugh) a lot

Past continuous (I was doing)

When to use it?

• To indicate that you were in the middle of something at a certain time 

Indication of time: when, while, at the same time

Past continuous (I was doing)

How to recognise / construct it?

• Was / were + - ing
  

I / you (s) / he / she / it was	+ play ing , do ing ,
We / you (p) / they were	work ing , etc.

Past continuous (I was doing)

1. Ferdinand ..... (to shout) to my best friend, while he ..... (to walk) his dog.

2. My brother and I ..... (to laugh) until we cried, when he started telling jokes.

3. Sarah ..... still ..... (to think) about her exam, while she ...... (to cycle) home.

Present perfect (I have done)

When to use it?

• An action in the past has a result now
  
• When we talk about a period in the past until now

Focusses on completion.

Present perfect (I have done)

How to recognise/ use it?

Have/ has + past participle (words ending with -ed or the third row)

I / we / they / you (p) have	+ finish ed , lost, done,
He / she / it has	been , etc.

Present perfect (I have done)

1. I ..... never ..... (to want) to go on an adventurous holiday.

2. My brothers and I ..... (to leave) the building for a few hours already.

3. She ..... (to know) that she is adopted since she was 6 years old.
