assignment 3
Summarize important facts (video and par. 2.3)  by answering the following questions:
  1. why do arteries have thick walls with large amounts of muscles and elastic fibres?
  2. why do veins contain valves?
  3. what is the driving force behind the blood flow in the veins?
  4. the blood pressure in capillaries is very low and so there is hardly any blood flow. Why is this functional?

--> answers will be discussed in the next lesson

Slide 5 - Slide

  1. Arteries must be capable of handling the high pressure with which the heart pumps the blood away.
  2. In order to make sure the blood keeps flowing towards the heart and does not fall back under low pressure, the veins are equipped with one-way valves (see figure 2.8).
  3. The blood flow in your veins is also helped by your skeletal muscles. When your skeletal muscles contract, the veins inside them are squeezed and blood moves towards the heart (see figure 2.10).
  4. Because the walls of capillaries are so thin, oxygen, water and nutrients easily flow out of them and into the tissues and cells that surround them (see figure 2.12).
Learning objectives: 'what I am going to learn?'
I can ....
  • explain what blood pressure is
  • where in the body blood pressure is the highest and where the lowest
  • describe 3 situation that may influence blood pressure

New key terms:
blood pressure - taking ones pulse - systole - diastole

assignment 1
  • read and summarize 2.4 button A and B in your notebook
  • watch the video (next slide)  and add new info to your summary
  • check whether the info in your summary covers when you have to answer the learning objectives and, eventually add new info.

  • learn your summary by heart before you continue....

assignment 2 : to take a pulse
  • watch the video in the next slide
  • take your own pulse in two situations: (you need the timer on your phone)
  1. at rest (after sitting silent for 45 seconds)
  2. after 45 seconds of jumping jacks (watch instructional video after the slide with 'take your pulse')
  • calculate the amount of heartbeats/min in each situation
  • record both situations in your note book and upload a picture of it in the Google Classroom
