Inequality
Tsar and nobility owned most of the land
Peasants were poor and had no rights
There was no democracy - the Tsar had all the power

22 januari 1905: large demonstration
The Tsar ordered his army to suppress the uprising by force. Hundreds of unarmed protesters were killed or wounded
But the Tsar did install the Duma - a parliament with very little power

A new ideology
A small group of people started to resist:
the communists
They believed that everybody in society should be
equal
. The state takes care of everything - nobody would steal or go hungry
They were prepared to use
violence
to gain power

Russia was suffering because of World War I: lots of losses, famine, poverty
The communists promised a better world: equality and no more hunger
In February 1917 uprisings broke out. Russian soldiers refused to fire on their own people
