Nationalism 
In 17th and 18th century parts of Indonesia were held by the VOC 

In the 19th century the Dutch East Indies were put under Dutch authority. 

They set up the ethical policy. 

Spreading the ''superior'' dutch culture 
Health care, farming, education and infrastructure

Sukarno and Hatta attend these Dutch schools

They studied in the Netherlands learning about western values of freedom, equality and democracy. 
Sukarno founded the PNI ( Partai Nasional Indonesia 
main goal: more autonomy 
Nationalism grew 

Sukarno was sent to prison in 1929 until 1942

Under pressure of the UN and the U.S.
